(Note: This
tactic is still in "outline" phase. More to come on this subject.)
Technique: Act
against your own self-interest – If you act in a way that appears to offer
you no gain or even to work against your own self interest you will be
perceived as trustworthy and therefore more effective. Even more appealing
is to APPEAR to act against your own self-interest while actually working
in your own self-interest. Ex. Bush installed tariffs on imported steel
in the second year of his administration. This appeared to most as a clear
act against his own self interest of open markets earning him credibility
points with the US citizenry. In reality, the move was entirely political
since the tariffs created some good will in steel producing states, thus
making reelection a little more likely. In any case, be careful. If you
act against your own self interest, then those who have supported you through
thick and thin might feel betrayed and you certainly can’t rely on the
opposition, however quelled for the moment to swing their support for you
in the long run. Ex. Is to claim to be a democrat and then bash progressive
policies as impractical or unrealistic. What if a criminal argued that
the US justice system was cruel and unjust? What if they argued that it
was too soft? After all if we are motivated to act against our own self-interest,
then the truth of the issue must be compelling and important (Ex. P 135
