Technique: Be informed. Now I know this is difficult and sometimes tedious, it does have its merits. The problem is that the most informed person is not necessarily the winner of any given debate. The reason is that many people simply don't care enough to check the "facts" or critically analyze the argument. With all that said, you will always be better off informed. (See also "Be Prepared")
