Technique: Claim to be an "ex" one of them. If you are a Republican and want to appeal to republicans, then claim to be an ex-liberal, implying that as you matured, you finally saw the light and the whimsy of your past ways. If this is impossible for some reason, (e.g. they know about your past) then get someone to testify on your behalf that is an "ex" one of them. The higher their profile, the better. This gives the speaker a unique credibility and affection that can only be obtained by handing the opposition the ultimate blow… a painful mutiny…an in-your-face assault on everything that your opponent stands for. What better perspective could one have to refute the nonsensical beliefs of the enemy.
