(Note: This
tactic is still in "outline" phase. More to come on this subject.)
Technique: Create
Granfalloons. Peoples’ desire to be a part of a group or, more simply,
to be accepted causes them to find great comfort and satisfaction with
being a member of a granfalloon. These positive feelings flow over to the
other members of the group making them much more likeable, attractive,
intelligent than “outsiders”. A granfalloon is a group of people with proud
and meaningless associations with one another (ex. Texans, Columbia Business
School Alumni, Guitarists, even sharing the same birthday, etc.) They carry
a shared label and treat each other as though they are friends or even
family. Similarities among members of the granfalloon are emphasized whereas
their differences with other groups are exaggerated. These social groups
serve as a source of pride and self esteem.
