Farenheit 9/11 opens on June 25th...but the number of theaters that will show it is still up in the air.
A movement is afoot to minimize the number of theaters that ultimately show this film, the Palme d'Or winner at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. The organizers of this partisan movement are attempting to undermine the credibility and marketability of Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11".
California-based Move America Forward, which says its goal is "supporting America's war on terrorism," has launched an electronic campaign, both via e-mail and through its Web site, encouraging theaters not to play Moore's film, which is critical of the war in Iraq.
Additionally, Move America Forward has listed on its Web site the movie theaters that either have agreed already to screen "Fahrenheit 9/11" or have not yet decided on a course of action. The Web site lists e-mail addresses of executives at 23 theater chains, both large and small, along with their business addresses, and it urges the public to contact them with their objections to the film.
And who's driving this 'movement' to undermine the first amendment and protect the Bush administration from the truth?
Hint: Think Republican (Oh. Already had that one eh?) Okay then, think 'undermining the will of the people' (What? Oh, you included that under 'Republican'? Understandable.) Then think Recall, California, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The Answer is Sal "Sour Grapes" Russo. Sal Russo served as an adviser to the Recall Gray Davis Committee after he managed Bill Simon's unsuccessful bid against Davis.
Who knows? Perhaps we should be thanking Sal for his efforts.
Said John Fithian, president of the National Association of Theater Owners: "Any time any organization protests against a movie, they ensure that the movie will do better at the box office than it would have done otherwise. If they have any doubt about this, just ask Mel Gibson."
Although it opened amid a firestorm of controversy this spring, Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" has grossed $370 million domestically.
"The movie theater is a place of public discourse, and all views and philosophies are welcome," Fithian said. "It's the right place for the public to debate public issues."
Take Action: This is what we have to do.
Send an email to the movie theater executives listed below. Toward the bottom of the page, I have compiled a single mailing list (email list separated by commas) suitable for copying and pasting into your "bcc:" field in your email browser. Be sure to paste the list into the "bcc:" field and not the others. This ensures that the recipient doesn't percieve your message as a mass mailing.
In addition, I have compiled an example letter that you can send to these executives. It explains the situation and more importantly it expresses the sender's:
a) support for the first amendment
b) insistence that the documentary be shown as a matter of historical record
c) disgust with the efforts of Sal Russo's front group to push a partisan agenda of censorship and government secrecy
d) desire to have the right to see the award winning documentary
e) acknowledgement that those who wish not to see the dicumentary can choose not to see it.
and also to...
f) point out that protested movies often make great business sense.
Use the whole thing or any part that you feel is appropriate. But do it now! We must fight back against the anti-constitutional, anti-democratic proponents of secrecy and propaganda that front for the Bush administration and we must do it now!
Here is the list of theaters and theater chains that are involved. Included are email addresses of relevant theater executives, mailing addresses and phone numbers.

Message to theater executives
Feel free to copy this message in whole or in part and paste it into your email browser to be sent to the above mailing list.
To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing this letter to request that you show Michael Moore’s documentary, “Fahrenheit 9/11”.
As I’m sure you know, “Fahrenheit 9/11” won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival showing that It is as much a work of theatrical art as it is a work of historical record. Such a work should be available for all who care to see it.
John Fithian, president of the National Association of Theater Owners agrees, "The movie theater is a place of public discourse, and all views and philosophies are welcome," Fithian said. "It's the right place for the public to debate public issues."
Indeed, in an open society where the free flow of information is necessary to drive the public debate, and where our constitutional freedom of speech provides the cornerstone for virtually everything we as a nation have accomplished to date, it is absolutely critical that every citizen have the right and the opportunity to access the information that they wish to access. Conversely, those who wish not to access this information can choose not to. That is the beauty of an open and free society.
Some seem to forget that there is not now, nor will there ever be room for censorship or secrecy in our great democracy. Such actions would be a great disservice to our society. Whose right is it to deny the public access to such public information?
Of course I understand that business considerations will be your primary concern as you navigate the potential courses of action to be taken. With that in mind, please recall the amazing financial success of another recent, oft-debated movie - - Mel Gibson’s, “The Passion of the Christ” which drew worldwide acclaim and some controversy… much like Moore’s latest piece.
I also understand that Sal Russo’s politically driven front group, “Move America Forward” is working a campaign to censor this documentary in order to protect various political figures from the information contained within. Perhaps someone should explain to him that censorship and secrecy could do nothing but move America backward toward a dark and Orwellian reality.
Just in case you’ve never heard of Sal Russo, you should be aware that he is a Republican political operative who served as an adviser to the “Recall Gray Davis Committee” after he managed Republican Bill Simon's unsuccessful bid for the California Governorship against Davis. I could hardly think of a more partisan driver for this “censorship campaign”.
Contrary to what Mr. Russo might think, the American public is quite capable of seeing the film and coming to their own conclusions regarding the information it contains.
I want to have the right to see this documentary in theaters. Please show Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 9/11”.
Thank you very much.
Please take action now. After you've sent your email, click on the "Refer This Site" text link here or at either the top or the bottom of this web page. This will allow you to send the URL of this page along with a personal message to as many as 10 email addresses at a time.
The censorship must stop NOW!!
