New York City Welcomes Bush and the Republican National Convention
08/30/04

I am a Manhattan boy and damn proud of it. At about 9:30 AM Sunday morning, I hopped onto the subway and joined over 200,000 patriots in a demonstration of democracy that could only send chills up the GOP's spine. Amazingly, I was somehow able to shimmy myself to the front line at times...only a few feet from Michael Moore and the Reverend Jesse Jackson.

...And I took some pictures that will knock your socks off...

United for Peace and Justice in New York City (NYC) protest against President George W. Bush and the Republican Party (GOP) on the first day of the Republican National Convention (RNC) -- Michael Moore and Jesse Jackson Lead the Way: August 29, 2004
Michael Moore and Jesse Jackson led the procession with other high profile progressives.

United for Peace and Justice in New York City (NYC) protest against President George W. Bush and the Republican Party (GOP) on the first day of the Republican National Convention (RNC) -- Jesse Jackson Megaphone: August 29, 2004
Here, Reverend Jackson stopped the marchers for a pep talk and a prayer.

United for Peace and Justice in New York City (NYC) protest against President George W. Bush and the Republican Party (GOP) on the first day of the Republican National Convention (RNC) -- Michael Moore Up Close: August 29, 2004
I told you I was in the front row. At one point, a member of the media standing next to me was hassling Moore when he somewhat sarcastically asked, "Michael Moore...What are you protesting today?” So I jumped in and asked (yelled) "Michael Moore...Your my Hero, man!” I know. More the words of a drunken frat brother than a political simpatico. Nonetheless, it drew a smile on his face and some laughs from the crowd.

United for Peace and Justice in New York City (NYC) protest against President George W. Bush and the Republican Party (GOP) on the first day of the Republican National Convention (RNC) -- Rachel Corrie's Parents: August 29, 2004
Also in attendance were the parents of Palestinian peace activist Rachel Corrie. As you might remember, Corrie was crushed to death by a bulldozer driven by two Israeli soldiers as she peacefully protested their plans to destroy the home of a Palestinian family in the Gaza Strip.

United for Peace and Justice in New York City (NYC) protest against President George W. Bush and the Republican Party (GOP) on the first day of the Republican National Convention (RNC) -- Bush on a Noose: August 29, 2004
This guy decided to put Bush on a noose. I wouldn't be surprised if he had an encounter with the secret service as the day progressed.

United for Peace and Justice in New York City (NYC) protest against President George W. Bush and the Republican Party (GOP) on the first day of the Republican National Convention (RNC) -- Rosie Perez: August 29, 2004
Actress Rosie Perez (With backpack) is a hometown favorite who charged up the crowds just prior to the march.

United for Peace and Justice in New York City (NYC) protest against President George W. Bush and the Republican Party (GOP) on the first day of the Republican National Convention (RNC) -- Peace Signs and Jesse Jackson: August 29, 2004
Says it all.

United for Peace and Justice in New York City (NYC) protest against President George W. Bush and the Republican Party (GOP) on the first day of the Republican National Convention (RNC) -- Image 1: August 29, 2004
And the crowds rocked! Everybody seemed to have a great time. Let's hope those good feelings are still around after November 2nd.

But wait! There's more. Tons more, but to see the rest of the pics, you will have to...

* Police line up in front of Madison Square Garden (Notice the giant Fox News Billboard right next to the RNC convention.)

* Republican delegates form a gaggle outside Madison Square Garden

* Front View of parade coming down the street. This was on 34th street. (Note that I only marched for half the route so I could get some additional pictures)

* Michael Moore Profile

* Fox News on JumboTron Protestors chanted "Fox Sucks.! Fox Sucks!" as the parade marched past the oversized broadcast of Fox News. (Simple but effective). Ironically, Fox was broadcasting a massive explosion in Afghanistan.

* Jesse Jackson with 'Bush Lies!' Sign in Foreground

* Jesse Jackson with Megaphone in Profile

* Veterans were out in full force and had a special place toward the beginning of the procession.

Thanks for the pictures. They really helped me to get a sense of the people and the excitement in NY. I would have felt very comfortable in that crowd of true patriots.

right on guys!

Now take the protest to DC and to every John Kerry rally as well.

Let's figure out a way to throw out both Bush and Kerry.

It's time to prepare for peace!

Right on Joanna. At this moment, it would appear the best way to throw them both out is to vote for Ralph Nader, because he is the leading alternative, and thus the most likely to actually have a chance.

I am surprised I am not seeing more people using the fact that Bush and his Junta are nothing more than war criminals at large.

Posted by: George Merican at August 30, 2004 10:02 PM

Hellooo! FRom Spain!! If we beat the fascists in our country you can beat the "war criminals" PLEASE THE FUTURE OF THE PLANET IT'S IN YOUR HANDS.... THANKS FOR SUCH BEAUTIFUL PICTURES, ALL MY SUPPORT...HASTA LA VISTA A TODOS, SALUDOS A NEW YORK...

Posted by: Sadko at August 30, 2004 10:56 PM

Unfortunately, for 2004, Ralph Nader's chance of winning the election is just above that of a snowball's chance in hell. If the Green Party became one with the Democratic Party than we could work together to defeat Bush--at least for this term. Let's work to change things from the inside out. It's the only way to provide hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Posted by: Brian at August 31, 2004 01:42 AM

Do NOT vote for Nader.
That will be Bush's only hope of keeping his regime in power.

That is a GOP wet dream.

Posted by: Ken at August 31, 2004 01:48 AM

I've always voted for the Democrats but this year I'm not. Either I won't vote, or I'll vote for Nader. It seems to me that what we have is a choice between 2 right wing political parties. Kerry lost my respect, and my vote, when it became apparent to me that he backs the Bush war in Iraq.

Posted by: Don Albert at August 31, 2004 02:09 AM

Great photos! But let's remember that the democrats are capitalists too and will never have the interests of us workers at heart. What the USA needs is what it has never had: a workers' party.

Posted by: Duane Sturm at August 31, 2004 02:37 AM

VOTE!?
Oh please. It's as significant as Wilma vs. Betty.
You think you can just "vote" out Lockheed Martin, mobil, Raythion, Halliburton, etc.
They spent way too much money for that to happen.
Heads up!

Posted by: Bill Corrigan at August 31, 2004 02:48 AM

Rachel Corrie peaceful? Obviously you've never seen the photos of her burning the American flag with that crazed look on her face (before she was flattened, of course). The world is a better place without her and would be without you Marxist scumbags too. Why don't you protest against N. Korea or Cuba or any other remaining "Worker's Paradise". Oh, that's right, you'd have to move out of your capitalist pig mom's basement. Have a nice day, losers.

Posted by: RachelCorrie at August 31, 2004 03:23 AM

Michael Moore molested me when I was a small boy.

Posted by: Sore ass at August 31, 2004 03:24 AM

Uh oh, I speaked too sooooon. The Socialists are coming to make me work in a salt mine! They killed my familia. Help me capitalists!!!

Posted by: Sadko at August 31, 2004 03:26 AM

For the cretin who called protestors Marxist scumbags and wanted protests against North Korea instead, if you had any brains you would see that this problem has festered under Bush and his neocon destructive clowns. You are undoubtedly too pathetically stupid to know that some of these great Bushie neocons have Trotskyite backgrounds and continue to follow his concepts on spreading revolution. You might not have heard of him, but he was one of Soviet Communism's founders along with Lenin. It is a truly noble and intelligent cause also to invade a country after telling lies to support the effort, then watch the entire Middle East threatened with instability. You ought to join George watching his dog chase armadillos. Less harm would be accomplished that way.
