GAO Says Bush Administration Broke Law with 'Covert Propaganda'
01/07/05
While only the tip of the iceberg, it's nice to see that the administration is being held accountable for something.
The Government Accountability Office, an investigative arm of Congress, said on Thursday that the Bush administration violated federal law by producing and distributing television news segments about the effects of drug use among young people.
The accountability office said the videos "constitute covert propaganda" because the government was not identified as the source of the materials, which were distributed by the Office of National Drug Control Policy. They were broadcast by nearly 300 television stations and reached 22 million households, the office said.
The accountability office does not have law enforcement powers, but its decisions on federal spending are usually considered authoritative.
In May the office found that the Bush administration had violated the same law by producing television news segments that portrayed the new Medicare law as a boon to the elderly.
The accountability office was not critical of the content of the video segments from the White House drug office, but found that the format - a made-for-television "story package" - violated the prohibition on using taxpayer money for propaganda.
Representative Henry A. Waxman of California, the senior Democrat on the Government Reform Committee, who requested the review, said the use of the mock news segments broke "a fundamental principle of open government."
Who in their wildest crackpot imagination (prior to Bush’s takeover of the White House) would think that the US would be found in criminal violation of producing and distributing propaganda within our borders? Sure, during war you have Psych-Ops dumping this crap on the opposition and other foreign targets...but within our borders...on a domestic topic.
This is so typical of the Orwell-in-office. The question is, how far are they willing to take these sorts of things? Do you really want to know the answer?

The right screams when people dare compare them to the third reich and then follows up by taking their directives from the Hitler playbook.
The GAO can't enforce their decision, even though it is a clear infraction of the law. Who enforces this? Ashcroft? Gonzales?
And if it is enforced, what happens and to whom?
"Criminal Violation"
So what. They get caught on 1 crime out of millions. Then that crime is essentially unenforcable. Remember, this is the SECOND time the administration has been caught with this shit.
They don't care. Expect it to continue ad nauseum.
You mean the shiny new medicare law is "NOT a boon to the elderly"? Wow.
Mein Friend Joseph Goebbels would be proud. Seig heil George W. Bush.
Why didn't one of our Dem. senators ask Gonzales about this during the judiciary hearing?
If anyone who reads this is doing so, or has the capabilities of creating, or knows of anyone or an organization which is working on developing a full color chart to log and describe the crimes of this administration, which could be cross-referenced by crime and date, please contact me.
I am demanding my money back. If the anti-abortion group gets consideration for the politic views, why shouldn't I. I don't want my tax dollars used for propaganda.
