Bad News on Bankruptcy Bill
03/08/05

Well, I offered my praise of Harry Reid too soon: the Dems have been unable to hold ranks on the bankruptcy bill. Today, Charles Schumer's "poison pill" abortion amendment, which would have banned abortion protestors from declaring bankruptcy to avoid paying fines for protesting, was defeated 46-53. Then cloture passed 69-31. This means that all debate on the bill is finished and it will come to a vote within the next couple of days. 69-31 means a whole bunch of Democrats broke ranks to vote for cloture, including many of the usual suspects -- Biden, Lieberman, Nelson, etc., even Herb Kohl.

It is deeply disappointing that this sop to the credit card companies will be getting passed. And equally disappointing that the Democrats have not yet learned how to hold ranks. The so-called "moderate" Repubs of the Specter Snowe variety all fall back in line when Frist calls, and it's long past time for the Dems to learn from their opponents.

Update
Here are the Dems who voted for cloture:
Biden (D-DE), Yea
Byrd (D-WV), Yea
Carper (D-DE), Yea
Conrad (D-ND), Yea
Johnson (D-SD), Yea
Kohl (D-WI), Yea
Landrieu (D-LA), Yea
Lieberman (D-CT), Yea
Lincoln (D-AR), Yea
Nelson (D-FL), Yea
Nelson (D-NE), Yea
Pryor (D-AR), Yea
Salazar (D-CO), Yea
Stabenow (D-MI), Yea

If you live in one of these states, let your Senator know how you feel about his or her putting the interest of credit card companies over people who, more often than not, are forced into bankruptcy by catastrophic illness and the subsequent unbelievably high medical bills.

Damn!!!!!!!1

Will we learn in time to save ourselves? And I'm not talking about the Democratic party, I'm tlking about America. God help us all!

Posted by: Rosey at March 8, 2005 08:14 PM

Wow! I am really learning to despise Salazar. To think we were actually excited to have him on board.

Posted by: Betty Stoufer at March 8, 2005 08:16 PM

Salazar (aka Zell Miller II)

or perhaps (Lieberman 1 1/2)

Losers all.

Posted by: Stephanie at March 8, 2005 08:18 PM

None of these surprises me except Biden. WTF was he thinking?

Posted by: Robin Star at March 8, 2005 08:20 PM

Hey, look at Nelson. He voted in two different states. We could use more of that in the Democratic Party (that is if they actually voted for Dem initiatives).

Get it. Nelson isn't the same person, he's two different people...two different, weak-kneed, miserable, fucking people.

Posted by: Jack at March 8, 2005 08:22 PM

I'm very worried that when it somes to dismantling the social security system, more than enough Democratic jellyfish can be found. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised that some lead a so-called bipartisan "compromise".

Posted by: Bob F at March 8, 2005 08:45 PM

Sorry folks, here in Colorado we THOUGHT we were electing a DEMOCRAT. Turns out we just elected another Turncoat Campbell. And to think I worked for Salazar's campaign. I think all of us who helped elect these turncoats should start a website like the I'mSorry website so we can say that we are sorry for electing invertibrates to the Senate.

I just wrote a letter entitled SHAME to a Senator I supported, Stabenow of MI. I told her that while I can't stand the green party (b/c it was instrumental in putting Resident Bush in the White House) a few more votes like this may make me reconsider. I've researched and she doesn't appear to be a major beneficiary of bank money. Does anyone have any idea why she would vote this way?? Is she DLC?

Posted by: Kenneth Knoppow at March 8, 2005 09:46 PM

everyone that cares needs to promise to work as hard as possible for their defeat. i know that it will be repugnant but join your local Dem party get some power and defeat these bastards. write and tell them that this is what you will do.

Posted by: beezelbub at March 8, 2005 10:53 PM

I am extremely disappointed in this turn of events. Seeing Biden's name at the top and Lieberman's names on the list really makes me shake my head. How can the politicians expect us to stand firm in support of them and Democratic initiatives when they can't be representative of their supporters? I am completely disgusted with the Democratic "Turn-Coats" - the 14 that give way to good old republican and corporate greed!

Posted by: Patty at March 8, 2005 11:15 PM

The country and the political process has been hijacked by corporate money. Our backs are being pushed against the wall more and more. One day we will realize we have to push back, hard.

Posted by: Niall McGinnis at March 9, 2005 12:09 AM

The votes of Biden and Carper come as no surprise to we Delawareans ... Delaware is home to the banking industry because of its lax regulatory requirements ... MBNA owns the place. Disgusting. Biden and Carper will be hearing from me.

Posted by: The Yeoman at March 9, 2005 12:19 AM

I just sent Howard Dean of the DNC and told him
"HANG THE 13". I'm sick of these 13. It's always the same ones. If they don't start acting like Democrats we will oppose any help, MONEY or the backing of the DNC for their re-election campaigns. I am outraged. They fail to get Kennedy's crummy minimum wage passed but their going to give the credit card companies a huge windfall. These companies cleared a billion dollars last year in fees.

It is beginning to look more and more hopeless , stopping this assault on American values and justice and on the people by these neocon nazis , looks like even the democratic party itself has been infiltrated . Maybe time to start thinking about heading north .

Posted by: john at March 9, 2005 02:24 AM

Bill Nelson of Florida is retiring after this term. We true Democrats were disappointed because of the chance that a Republican could take the seat, but we would not have it much better if he stayed.

He could have stood up for our principles since he is not going to run again. But then again, what job is he expecting after retirement? Citizens of Florida, keep an eye on Bill Nelson.

It is beginning to look more and more hopeless , stopping this assault on American values and justice and on the people by these neocon nazis , looks like even the democratic party itself has been infiltrated . Meanwhile the people yawn and go grab another ding dong . Maybe time to start thinking about heading north .

I, to am fed up with these
Republican lite Democrats. I hope all true liberals work at the local level to put fire to the feet of these turncoat politicians. They are betraying the the heart of America for the Almighty dollar. Greed is going to destroy this country!!!

Posted by: Tony at March 9, 2005 03:43 AM

Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia has exposed the G.W. Bush administration for what they ARE!

FASCISTS working in the guise of Nazis'.

And it is time for ALL of us to get behind Sen. Byrd for being brave enough to reveal the truth!!!

Posted by: kouka at March 9, 2005 04:28 AM

I can hardly credit one of my state's senators, Debbie Stabenow, for her outrageous vote for cloture on the bankruptcy bill. It is mystery to me how Democratic sentators can so cavalierly desert their constituents.

Until and unless the Democratic Party learns the lesson of party discipline, I fear we will lose more voters to fringe parties. What are we progressives to do when our own elected leaders cave in to monied interests? Arrrrgh!

Posted by: Jack Eilar at March 9, 2005 05:17 AM

People need to wake up. Our political system is broken beyond any repair. It doesn't matter if it's Republicant or Dumocrat they are ALL the same. CORRUPT. Bought and paid for by corporations, special interests, and foreign powers. It's the same as having a Bank Robber as president of the bank. Your elected leader does not care about you in the least. The only cure is to completely and unquestionably excise the cancer be fore this nation can heal by putting the power back into the hands of the people. Ban the PACS and all campaign contributions of any sort. Ban all lobbyists, Take away all perks from the pigopolists. No free healthcare, no lifetime pension. Put the critters on social security like the rest of us and I guarantee it will be restored. Ban associations with foreign governments and for god sake ban all foreign aid except for emergencies such as the tsunami. No military aid, no loan guarantees. nada...zip...nothing. No illegal wars based on lies. If you take all that money and use it where it rightly belongs with the taxpaying citizen for education, health care, etc. It's about time the American people get something back for their hard earned monies. Rant Over.

Posted by: Randy at March 9, 2005 05:43 AM

Ican't beleive that
I would ever come to this point, after Rev.King and all those trailblazers before me fought and died for my right to vote, but, I am almost there. why is it that repubs can stand together as one and Dems wouder off on their own? I remember when Clinton passed his budget NOT ONE Repub voted forit that would never happen Dems. Malcon X once said that "If you dont stand for something, you'll fall for anything"
people dont vote because they see this kind of things going on in DC. I will be calling Pryor tomorrow. dems is going to loose more of their base if they keep this up, there is really an assult on the american people and no one is during anything about it. Overtime pay, this bill, social security, tax cut for the rich, giving themselves a raise every year, can't pass a minimun raise for the people.NO health care for the people I don;t understand it!! WHAT'S NEXT?

Posted by: doristene at March 9, 2005 06:00 AM

Democrats/Republicans?

Anybody out there start to get it yet. In case you missed it the revisionist are rewriting the Constitution where there is only one political party.

It starts with the phrase WE THE COPORATIONS.

We know and you should know how far they are willing to go since they already went all the way. Want to wake up? Visit http://www.toxicreality.com documented facts don’t lie.

Posted by: H.M. Stephen J. O'Dell at March 9, 2005 07:08 AM

I think we should just 'Dump the Incumbents' and start over. All of them. That would send a message.

Posted by: Scott Drager at March 9, 2005 11:29 AM

This proves that both the GOP & Dems are bought off by credit card companies, like we always suspected. These credit card companies probably sponsor the presidential debates...you know, the ones where they only let the GOP & Dems debate? Ralph Nader, Cobb, & the Libertarian party would drive the issues in a presidential debate, and rip both the GOP & Dems a new asshole, that's why the corporate sponsors don't let them in.

Posted by: big dan at March 9, 2005 12:42 PM

The god dam Dems, when are they going to stick together, and vote as a hole body of Dems, the GOP do.

Posted by: Ralph at March 9, 2005 04:59 PM

People in the USA are to STUPID to wakeup. The beacon of light has been extinguish in this country. Expect chaos in the not so near future.

Posted by: J MOHEAD at March 9, 2005 06:20 PM

I emailed 8 Senators yesterday, including mine (Stabenow) and told them I was ashamed of them. I also berated them that their "topics" lists on their email pages had nothing on the traditional Democratic values, such as poverty, homelessness, hunger, civil rights, voting rights, teh economy, minimum wage, affordable housing, etc. I even sent an email to Sen. Reid -- I got back almost instantly a response that said unless I was from Utah (I'm not) then my email was not going to be read or answered! Major B.S.

Posted by: George T at March 9, 2005 11:26 PM

And, oh yeah, about Byrd's impassioned defense of the "unlimited debate" he so treasures in the Senate? He also voted FOR the cloture motion to end debate!! Asses, all of them.

Posted by: George T at March 9, 2005 11:28 PM

As a Wisconsin resident, I have seen our state constitutional rights gradually eroded by the politics of money and fear, and WI residents are now routinely fingerprinted during traffic stops. And now a betrayal by Herb. Well, I'm not too surprised. Kohl is one of the richest men in our state, and the trend seems to be for senators and congressional reps (HA!) to vote their own best interests, regardless of the hardship on their constituancy. Fuck 'em. let them push the country as far as they can. If history has taught us anything, it is that the delusional greed of a psychopathic ruling class will eventually earn them revolution. It is time to stop trying to fix the current system, and start planning the goverment that will take it's place after we put the heads of our so called "leaders" on pikes. If it's a free world, why do we need "leaders". I do not need to be led. As a free man, I choose my own path, and my government exists to serve, not to rule.

Posted by: Praxis at March 10, 2005 03:15 AM

I've given my last dime to the democratic party as they're mostly a bunch of whores. And we thought the republicans were the fascists. This is the worst Congress in my memory and I'm 82

Posted by: John N. at March 10, 2005 04:50 AM

People should send a stronge email to those senators and remind them that if they don't act like democrats and care for the interest of the people they won't be elected again. People should go out in demonstrations in front of thier offices.

Posted by: muhnad at March 10, 2005 05:58 AM

By having such friends,we don't need any enemies.

Posted by: karl.l at March 10, 2005 06:08 AM

Bad news everybody! The latest group of "trained professionals"
we have "chosen" to lead this (insert country name here) are no better or worse than thier predecesors- the self serving treachery they practice is just more exposed! The latest group of "experts" practiced in different economic systems that in the end will ultimatly achieve the same results. The fatal flaws in the communist ideology brought that system down and the fatal flaws in capitalism are revealing themselves even as we speak! Now don't worry, we have "experts" in military, religious dogma, race relations and human sexuality to name a few, that will totally turn this around, this time, hopefully. This latest chapter on our legacy as the human race speaks loudly and repeatedly of the brutality we are capable of preforming on those deemed as anyway different from ourselves. We could have done much better for ourselves in so many ways. On the bright side, we won't be able to kick ourselves for becoming extinct.Todays bonus question is this-Did you ever wonder if god just rubber stamps the waivers
on the ban against killing, when it is done in his name?

Posted by: electricmike at March 10, 2005 08:01 AM

Very relieved to see none of my MA guys here. I had written to them the other day, but it's usually moot, cause they generally vote Liberal. (Although sometimes John Kerry upsets me, and I do have to wonder what the hell he's thinking).
They are all a bunch of panderers these days, and yes, they need to be stopped.
Hell in a handbasket. here we come.

Posted by: Linda at March 10, 2005 06:36 PM

I'm Telling You, the Senators from New York, New Jersey, California, Illinois, and Massachusetts, wouldn't vote for a bill like this, Get Real.

Why Don't you get a list of Republicans that voted againist the bill, I know they Don't Trust the Bush Adminstration just as much as the Liberals don't do.

These Democrats better not make Bush look good, or I won't vote for them if they do, and that Pissing Me Off.

Posted by: TimothyB foley at March 10, 2005 11:58 PM

As a C-Span junkie I often watch the Senate & House discussions/debates (no talking heads to tell me what to think). I, too, am appalled at what passes for representatives of "we the people". Two weeks of talk, quorum calls, amendments, quorum calls, votes, quorum calls on a bankruptcy bill "written by the credit card industry". Most disturbing, besides the number of Dems who voted for cloture, is the fact that no bandruptcy reform would be needed if there were healthcare reform, any increase in real wages for American workers (besides CEO's and the privileged few at the top of the corporate ladder), an administration which backed organized labor so decent wages and benefits could be negotiated and fought for.
Most amazing are the "TWO ELEPHANTS" in the room that they all seem to be able to void seeing -- Elephant #1:the MASSIVE federal deficit for which interest payments will absorb all federal revenue now going for entitlements and social services (read: humanitarian purposes) in 2018 the same year Social Security will begin to pay out more than it takes in and Elephant #2: Medicare, which began paying out more than its revenues one year ago. (And now we learn that our infrastructure, bridges, water plants, etc. are falling into disrepair while we send billions of dollars to the Middle East for an unnecessary neocon war.)Democrats have not learned from the Republican's methodology for success -- divide and conquer. But that is not the America I grew up in. I'm not sure I want to continue living in a country (becoming more fascist everyday) I cannot be proud of. John says it may be time to move north. I'm thinking south.
I pray that things will change without violence -- but violence is often the result when oppressed people become ultimately frustrated.
Corporate America owns the system. I recommend the book "When Corporations Rule The World" and "Confessions of an Economic Hitman".
