11/02/05 :: By P. M. Carpenter Apocalypse NowCategories :: Democrats
Samuel Alito’s nomination to the Supreme Court can do far more than replace Sandra Day O’Connor amidst a short-term political battle. Done right, the Democrats’ response can set the political stage for the next three years. For the loyal opposition...
08/22/05 :: By P. M. Carpenter Fear of loathingCategories :: Democrats
Last Friday the Washington Post’s David Ignatius wrote this increasingly familiar refrain: This should be the Democrats' moment: The Bush administration is caught in an increasingly unpopular war; its plan to revamp Social Security is fading into oblivion; its deputy...
06/20/05 :: By P. M. Carpenter “Lessons from the battlefield”: A memorable memoCategories :: Democrats
The latest polling data (New York Times/CBS News) on Americans’ opinion of Congress would seem to indicate that a wholesale House-cleaning is in store for 2006. The numbers are truly astounding and a reflection of how badly the Republicans have...

Reid calls Bush a Liar and doesn't apologize.
05/31/05 :: By P. M. Carpenter To have and have notCategories :: Democrats
Senate Democrats blew it. Strategically they took one step forward and then two back tactically, the one familiar battle maneuver of the modern Democratic Party. I write, of course, about the filibuster-agreement affair. Its short and unhappy life was, for...
05/26/05 :: By S.M. Dixon Gingrich Helps ReidCategories :: Democrats :: Framing 101
Harry Reid brilliantly reframed the Democratic Party in a speech before the National Press Club today. These are talking points, folks!
05/25/05 :: By S.M. Dixon You've Got Mail... Angry MailCategories :: Democrats :: Judges/Judiciary
A clarification of the post, "Democrats Surrender the Filibuster," inspired by angry e-mail from fellow Lefties.
05/24/05 :: By S.M. Dixon Democrats Surrender the FilibusterCategories :: Breaking News :: Democrats :: Judges/Judiciary
The Democratic Party has just blown it. Big time.
05/16/05 :: By P. M. Carpenter Missin’ the bloody point, as usualCategories :: Democrats
Last Friday, Chris Matthews and his guests were frolicking in another of Hardball’s analysis-free zones. If you’re a regular viewer of MSNBC’s FOXy-R-Us fare, then perhaps you were as dismayed as I by that night’s “Tom DeLay segment.” The preceding...

05/11/05 :: By S.M. Dixon Why Are The Dems Fighting Back?Categories :: Democrats
In the 1990's the GOP planted several seeds that, nearly a decade later, have produced a crop of severely ticked-off Democrats...
04/25/05 :: By Scott Shields Why I'm A Democrat: A Welcome ReminderCategories :: Democrats
Periodically, it's nice to be reminded why I carry water for a party that has a tendency to be somewhat erratic, even schizophrenic, and woefully disorganized. I guess you could say that it comes down to the priorities, stupid!

Excerpts from a summary of Wesley Clark's speech to the CA Democratic convention.
04/14/05 :: By Stu Finkel Democrats: Fighters and AppeasersCategories :: Class Warfare :: Congress :: Democrats
What is becoming ever clearer during the current legislative session is that the Democratic Party is divided between fighters and appeasers. The disheartening fact is that a number of representatives and senators continue to think that the only way to...

03/06/05 :: By Stu Finkel An Impressive First Round for Harry ReidCategories :: Democrats
Admit it. You, too, were among the doubters when Harry Reid was named to replace Tom Daschle as Senate minority leader. Here, you thought, was another gray, uncharismatic moderate from a red state who would put up at best token...
02/14/05 :: By Stu Finkel How to be an Opposition PartyCategories :: Democrats
James Wolcott (via Kos) gets it perfectly: I wonder if Dems are learning the wisdom imparted by Bull Moose, that there's mischievous and useful fun to be had in being the opposition party, particularly when the party in power is...
02/10/05 :: By Tom Ball Is the Democratic Leadership Strong-Arming Democrats into Submission?Categories :: Democrats
Now I believe in tolerance and encourage a diversity of opinions. However, there is a time for cooperation and there is a time to stand firm as an opposition party. Under the current conditions, I fully encourage the Democratic leadership to take one out of the Republican playbook and stand firm as the progressive opposition to a radical, right-wing administration and legislature.
02/02/05 :: By Tom Ball Punditocracy Annoints Dean as DNC ChairCategories :: Democrats
Although the vote for DNC chair is still days away, the pundits have already called the race for Dean -- and they're never wrong. Right?
01/12/05 :: By Tom Ball Howard Dean for DNC ChairCategories :: Dean, Howard :: Democrats
With a sense of great pride and unmitigated confidence, I endorse Howard Dean for DNC Chair. The reasons are many but easily summarized: In 2004 "Anyone But Bush" motivated me, but Howard Dean Inspired me. Back in the infancy of 2003 as I was innocently flipping through some channels, I came upon a man speaking. I paused...then put down the remote. He was inspiring. I immediately identified with him and his message…and for the first time ever felt a sort of ideological bond with a person I had never met. That man was Howard Dean.
12/24/04 :: By Delton Murphy Moving 'Right' AlongCategories :: Democrats
Continuing to follow the strategy that consistently costs them elections, the Democrats are currently engaged in dialogue aimed at 're-evaluating' their position on Abortion.
12/10/04 :: By Stu Finkel The Great DebateCategories :: Democrats :: Satire :: Tactics
Tom Tomorrow nails in less than a nutshell why Democrats need to change the way they approach politics, and I can only hope that someone sends Harry Reid a thousand copies of this cartoon to be plastered as wallpaper in his Minority Leader's Office.
12/07/04 :: By Stu Finkel Peter Beinart's Historical GobbledygookCategories :: Democrats :: Foreign Policy :: Iraq :: Terrorism
In a cover piece for the New Republic, Peter Beinart incorrectly equates the liberal dilemma today on how to deliver a convincing anti-terrorist message with that after World War II on how to deliver a strong anti-Communist message.
11/30/04 :: By Stu Finkel Howard Speaks, I ListenCategories :: Dean, Howard :: Democrats :: Progressive Strategy
I went to hear Howard Dean speak last night here at Stanford, and he didn't disappoint. Even though this was part of a speaker series, in a sitdown auditorium and with a theoretically neutral audience, and with no election in sight, it felt more than a bit like a campaign event.
11/21/04 :: By Stu Finkel Presidential Yacht and the DemocratsCategories :: Democrats :: George W. Bush :: Hypocrisy :: Propaganda/Spin
One of the many items of pork in the omnibus bill passed yesterday is $2 million to buy back the Presidential Yacht. As Atrios observes, if the Democrats don't know how to foment outrage with this, all may very well...
11/20/04 :: By Stu Finkel Pelosi Stands UpCategories :: Democrats
There isn’t too much the Democrats can do actually to affect the course of legislation over the next two (and probably four) years. They are, of course, a shrinking minority in both Houses of Congress, and the Republicans are sufficiently...
11/14/04 :: By Stu Finkel No More Nice GuysCategories :: Democrats
Jesse Taylor says what we've all been thinking: Do the Democrats really think that continuing to play by the rules like nice boys and girls is going to work?
11/14/04 :: By Stu Finkel The Circular Firing SquadCategories :: Democrats
Yes, we on the left are famous for lining up and shooting our own, especially given our recent dismal electoral record. How ironic, then, when those who have been responsible for helping driving us off the cliff try to tell us what other people are doing wrong, as Josh Marshall notes.
11/12/04 :: By Delton Murphy Kicking The Ass Into ShapeCategories :: Activism :: Democrats :: Election 2004 :: Kerry-Edwards 2004 :: Reader Interaction
Donkeys are famously known (and revered) for their stubbornness. When they detect danger they watch it. They do not run from it and they certainly cannot be forced towards it. The similarities between donkeys and democrats are almost eerie.
