They Hate the Rule of Law
Categories :: Blowhards :: Conservatives :: Government :: Judges/Judiciary During the series of Witch Hunts that constituted the GOP's orchestrated reaction to the election and re-election of President Clinton, we constantly heard the tiring refrain that it was all about the rule of law. It wasn't the sex, it...

The “Others”: Empire-building
Categories :: Government

The lines have clearly formed in the reality-based community on the current issues facing the newly sworn-in 109th Congress. To clarify what’s at stake on the two sides, the title of this piece invokes previous installments. For background, link here and here. This post focuses on the contrast between the reality-based community and the “Others,” the Imperialist Extremists. Let’s look at the priorities evident in the activities of Day 1.

Support Our Troops! (until they come home)
Categories :: Bush Administration :: Government :: Iraq :: Military

The battle for a number of US Troops continues when they return home. While some American soldiers are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, other are suffering from the effects of depleted uranium or mental illness triggered by their combat experience. Others find they have no place to live.

More Use of Abuse

As the war spins out of control the evidence of detainee and prisoner torture intensifies.

Torture A La Carte
Categories :: Bush Administration :: Government :: Iraq :: Military

It seems the more we talk about detainee torture in Abu Ghraib or Guantanemo Bay, the less it gets covered; revelations from the FBI notwithstanding.

Ethnic Cleansing: Bush Style
Categories :: Bush Administration :: Civil Rights :: Discrimination :: Government

Arabs, Africans, Latinos, Muslims --the United States government just can't seem to agree on the best way to get rid of these pesky ethnicities: war, deportation, drug testing or concentration camps. Maybe a combination of all these tactics will finally do the trick.

Amend This!
Categories :: Elections :: Government :: Schwarzenegger, Arnold

Could Arnold Schwarzenegger really become President? The Governator's growing popularity in California, coupled with a 51% Republican "mandate" and overwhelming support for the Bush Administration and the Republicans in the slave states (and states open to slavery), brace yourselves--you ain't seen nothing yet.

The Reign of Witches
Categories :: Government :: History :: Philosophy

Thomas Jefferson, from a letter he sent in 1798 after the passage of
the Sedition Act: "A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles."

The Failure of Vision
Categories :: Government Just one point on the Democratic Convention and Clinton’s speech last night. The Big Dog emphasized the goodwill and unity that Bush squandered. We liberals look back on the Clinton presidency as one that failed to deliver on its promise,...

Money Makes the World Go 'Round

What happens when the “fiscal responsibility” ideal of the Republican Party conflicts with the “support the troops” ideal?

By way of an introduction...
Categories :: Government

Though much attention has and will continue to be directed towards issues like Iraq this election cycle, the fact remains that public debate on substantive foreign policy issues has traditionally been superficial at best. I think that we can contribute to making that debate and these issues more accessible to the wider public, and, in particular, to keeping a closer eye on the foreign policy decisions our elected officials are making.

Voting Wrongs: How Touch Screen Voting is a Catastrophe in the Making
Categories :: Election 2004 :: Elections :: Government :: Republicans :: Tactics

If the Canadians can use paper ballots in their presidential election and count their votes in four hours, why are we having such a difficult time counting and deciding how to count our votes in the United States? When did this become so hard for us to do?

Senator Kerry: Study the British Model
Categories :: Government :: Kerry, John

While America functions under a constitutional system of checks and balances, Great Britain is a parliamentary system operating without a written constitution. There is one outgrowth of a political system predicated on party government worth studying by Senator John Kerry and his top advisers, that of Shadow Cabinet spokespersons and the ramifications accompanying the theory.

The Empire Builders
Categories :: Government :: History :: Military

Empires never last and generally have violent, unpleasant endings and with the reality of an 'American Empire' upon us, citizens hoping for change to occur through the creation, selection or election of a political savoir is a fairy-tale response akin to a damsel in distress waiting to be rescued.
