The calls serve as both an organizing power for progressive blog investigations/exposes and a tool for relationship-building with members of the mainstream media. And now the MSM has taken notice. On the cover of today’s New York Times Business Section is a feature article on the creation and functioning of BlogCall.org. Congratulations Bob!

02/10/05 :: By Tom Ball Gannon Scandal Breaks Wide OpenCategories :: Media
The most interesting thing about this, is that the effort to expose Gannon as a no-talent, non-credentialed, family-value-hypocrite, pseudo-propagandist, GOP insert with access to the highest levels of the White House -- even while using a fake name, was perpetuated, not only by the progressive bloggers, but also by the commenters and diarists. It was a testament to the successes that can be achieved and the justice that can be wrought when the political left works together intelligently and aggressively.

12/14/04 :: By William Hare Moyers Farewell Address Promises to be MemorableCategories :: Media
Friday night Bill Moyers will make his final appearance on his nationally syndicated Public Broadcasting System program. Before even hearing his farewell address I am reminded of the famous final speech that President Dwight D. Eisenhower made one of history’s memorable speeches in warning his fellow citizens of “the unwarranted influence of the military-industrial complex.”
12/14/04 :: By William Hare Gary Webb, RIPCategories :: Media
I was deeply saddened to learn yesterday about the death of Gary Webb at the age of 49 in what has been listed as an apparent suicide. Webb was one of the most honest and courageous reporters of his era and, as a result, suffered an undeserved pummeling from a sharp-edged mainstream media operating under the concept that “If you want to destroy a message then destroy the messenger.”

Those who have been following the reaction to Rumsfeld's bumbling (and horrifying) response to the solider in Iraq who wondered why they had to go through scrap heaps to get armor for their tanks know that by now the Right Wing's Mighty Wurlitzer has adopted its tried and true tactic of obfuscation. That is, they have attempted to make the story about the fact that the embed reporter helped the soldier formulate his question rather than the far more important and relevant point that the Department of Defense is failing our men in uniform and has no good answers for why it is putting them in harms way without proper protection.

11/23/04 :: By Delton Murphy Framing News vs. PropagandaCategories :: Framing 101 :: Media :: Progressive Strategy :: Propaganda/Spin :: Reference
There is definitely a need and a place for commentary and editorials but when obvious opinions and partisan politicking replace news and journalism, the "truth" becomes quickly lost in the shuffle. When one looks at the current climate of news and information in the US, specifically the mainstream corporate media, the lines of demarcation are not as clear.

Duh! The Republicans did it with Fox News, The Washington Times, UPI and other institutions, foundations and organizations funded by right wing billionaires. Surely there are some left-wing billionaires that would feel obliged to pitch in and do the same. 10/05/04 :: By Delton Murphy The Paranoia of the ThiefCategories :: Books :: Discrimination :: Election 2004 :: Media :: Progressive Strategy
We consciously live in an era where fiction substitutes for fact, lies become misstatements, justice is now revenge and war is quickly becoming the norm. The unholy alliance between the Republicans and the Right Wing has just intensified as we enter the homestretch of the presidential election. The fact that they are resorting to these tactics is evidence that they are running scared. Gone is the Bush strut and swagger. Absent are the Haiku-laced press conferences of Donald Rumsfeld, who just yesterday had to admit that he has "seen no evidence of a Saddam Hussein-Al Qaeda connection". And Dick Cheney hasn't attempted to unite the country through fear in almost two weeks. Uh-oh. It seems that finally after four years, the paranoia of the thief has kicked in.

In the August 2004 issue of Harper's magazine, Lewis Lapham asks "How do progressives build a thirty-year movement in the same way that conservatives did during the 1960s and 1970s?" The question usually becomes how then can this be mimicked or re-created. The thinkers that have gathered around Lapham's roundtable, however, do little to address this issue directly.

"OutFOXed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism", directed by Robert Greenwald, takes a highly partisan approach to FOX News, a 24-hour “news” channel with a decidedly right-wing slant. In short, FOX News is a 24-hour propaganda machine not just for the Republican Party, but also for the current president and the ideologues in his administration, whose policies are firmly supported (financially and ideologically) by Rupert Murdoch, the multi-billionaire owner of the FOX News Channel.
