General Van Riper, in summing up the lesson learned from this quarter-billion dollar fiasco, also encapsulated, either by purpose or coincidence, the world in which we live under the oppressive ignorance of a Bush regime:
"Nothing was learned from this... A culture not willing to think hard and test itself does not augur well for the future."

Today, Michael Moore distributed an extremely powerful letter written by a woman who has spent years working as an advocate for victims of domestic abuse. She sites the numerous, eye-opening parallels between battered women and the current state of the political left in America. In turn, she provides an inspiring rally cry to downtrodden progressives. The letter is worth reading in it's entirety, but I have highlighted some critical portions below.

There's little doubt just who hates America - American values - freedom, liberty and justice for all.

When you think about all those sheeple in the red states, remember it has never been the masses that initiate necessary social change. Blue state folks (and blue people living in the red), it is up to us to raise the consciousness of those in the red states, not shift toward racism, intolerance, homophobia, war and social injustice.

Thomas Jefferson, from a letter he sent in 1798 after the passage of
the Sedition Act: "A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles."
10/20/04 :: By Stu Finkel The Faith-Based Presidency, Laura Bush, and The Grand InquisitorCategories :: George W. Bush :: Philosophy :: Religion
George W. Bush's faith-based presidency is based on the fallacy that true belief depends on being unquestioning. Even Laura Bush's favorite author Dostoyevsky, himself an ardent Christian conservative, knew better: faith is based precisely on being free to not believe, and to believe nonetheless.

It's difficult to begin to heal the deep-seated wounds of 9/11 with Osama Bin Laden still at-large. As someone who lost a friend during the World Trade Center attacks, the capture of Saddam Hussein and the assassination of his sons along with over 11,000 Iraqi civilians and countless Afghanis, didn’t make me feel any better nor did it bring me any closure.

How Bill O'Reilly inspired me to create a model for societal growth and collapse, and what it means for the punditocracy.

In the August 2004 issue of Harper's magazine, Lewis Lapham asks "How do progressives build a thirty-year movement in the same way that conservatives did during the 1960s and 1970s?" The question usually becomes how then can this be mimicked or re-created. The thinkers that have gathered around Lapham's roundtable, however, do little to address this issue directly.
06/17/04 :: By Tom Ball "America - Love it or leave it!": New Slogan of the Free Speech MovementCategories :: Philosophy :: Tactics
I think "America- Love it or leave it" should become the slogan of the free speech movement. As the freedom to speak one's views is surely one of the most cherished of our individual liberties, is it not clearly those who would attempt to silence the voice of others who are out of place here?

Last week in the midst of the post-mortem discussions about Ronald Reagan and his political legacy Steve Forbes appeared on CNN with Wolf Blitzer. The former presidential candidate and staunch advocate of the regressive flat tax discussed Reaganomics with the usual dodgy rhetorical dance steps of its apologists.

Which is worse, death by terrorism or death by military strikes? Is there a difference? And if there is, does that difference matter? Do you think the families of the victims of either methodology feel any less pain and suffering because of the capabilities of the killer?
