03/09/05 :: By Tom Ball Was Saddam's Capture a Hollywood Production?Categories :: Iraq :: Lies :: Propaganda/Spin
We've all come across the type who still believe that man's landing on the moon was just a production of good old American cinematography. Ironically, these same people are the ones who would sacrifice their dignity to fawn over recent works of Bush propaganda. You can bet they were gaga over the manner in which Saddam was captured -- how appropriate it was that he had to be dragged from his vermin infested, rat hole... like the cowardly filth that he is. To others however, the 'capture' seemed just a bit too perfect in its symbolism -- as though the entire thing had been a staged event, perhaps even requiring signed 'affidavits of loyalty' to behold.

the real importance of the Gannon story had nothing to do with sex or prostitution but about our growing knowledge of the elaborate Soviet-style White House propaganda network, and, potentially, about how a paid propaganda agent may have been involved in the outing of an undercover CIA agent.

Remember the question that I asked at the end of my last post on Bush Propaganda? Well, the answer is... we haven't even begun to see the extent to which this administration will go when it comes to asserting their agenda. And why should we? They committed atrocities beyond compare in their first term and the American electorate gave them a free pass. I don't blame the Republicans one bit for relentlessly pursuing their agenda.

Finding credible information at the Economic "Summit" is proving to be more illusive than Bernie Kerik's "nanny." There is definitely a need and a place for commentary and editorials but when obvious opinions and partisan politicking replace news and journalism, the "truth" becomes quickly lost in the shuffle. When one looks at the current climate of news and information in the US, specifically the mainstream corporate media, the lines of demarcation are not as clear.

OK, so we now that yes, Virginia, there were typewriters with proportional spacing in 1972. But, alas, that fact alone is not enough. You see, the “forgery” would-be scandal is what brother-in-arms Tbogg refers to as an “evolving smear”. If you check the post on Powerline (no, I’m not linking to it) you’ll learn that the original accusation has been modified 14 times. Basically, a series of self-styled experts wrote in to talk about what else is wrong with the documents, and the ‘wingers treat it as gospel.

Okay, so now they are 'questioning' the authenticity of the Bush Gaurd documents presented on '60 Minutes' this week. They are in a quandary as to how the documents from the early 1970s could possibly have 'proportional spacing' when that phenomenon at the time was only available in a sparsely distributed word processor that was virtually nonexistent in governtment ranks. For some reason, the 'experts' seem to have overlooked a conventional, widely used typewriter born of IBM in 1941 that had as its claim to fame...none other than....proportional spacing!!

Bill O’Reilly recently lamented that the New York Times has vacated its former position of being America’s great newspaper of fact and has become instead a liberal mouthpiece. Yes, Bill, we remember how the New York Times was in the forefront of turning Al Gore into, in the media’s jaundiced eyes, a “serial exaggerator” when he allegedly boasted of having invented the Internet and having been the true life example used by Erich Segal portrayed by Ryan O’Neal in Love Story. In the first instance there was egregious misquoting. Those of us who took the trouble to read the full quote in question know that Gore stated that he had voted in the Senate to provide the Internet’s original federal funding. Gore made no claim about being Erich Segal’s true-life lead character in Love Story. That erroneous claim resulted from a story in Gore’s hometown Nashville newspaper which he did not inspire and over which he had no control.

In Bill Clinton’s 1992 winning presidential campaign adviser James Carville achieved enduring recognition with the famous strategy saying he tacked up on the wall of the Little Rock war room, “It’s the economy, Stupid!” The succinct message was that the overriding issue gripping the attention of Americans in the election was the economy.
