05/11/05 :: By P. M. Carpenter More Thunder on the Right: The Propaganda Ministry of Christian BroadcastingCategories :: Religion
Thanks to reader Steve Wolfson, who sent an expansive and riveting Columbia Journalism Review article on Christian evangelical broadcasting in America. Its reportage on the movement’s sheer numbers, cultivated by extraordinarily brash propagandists, is enough, however, to prompt one to...

Remain vigilant as the Bush Administration spins the new Catholic Leader as a stalwart icon of Bush's neoconservative agenda citing their shared (I hate to use the term, but...) "Culture of Life". And remember this about Pope John Paul II:

"Yeah," Bernie said, ramming a cookie into his mouth, "that's the difference between you and me. I think. I think the Pope fought everything Bush stands for with all his might -- he publicly called on world leaders, especially those on the UN Security Council, to thwart Bush's resolution on Iraq and to ward off the destruction he knew the Bush administration was planning. He even sent Cardinal Pio Laghi, a friend of Poppy's, as his special envoy to plead with Bush not to invade Iraq, but Bush told him it would all be over in the wink of an eye. Just trust me, Bush says. I think," Bernie continued, "as does investigative journalist Wayne Madsen, that the Pope, if not convinced, was at least fearful that Bush was the anti-Christ warned about in The Revelation.

In 1981, Audrey Santo became a living relic after an accident left her permanently brain damaged. Today, we compare Audrey to our own living relic of political convenience.

02/07/05 :: By Tom Ball Was Bush Prophesized in the Book of Revelations?Categories :: Religion
People have been speculating on the emergence of an antichrist ever since there was a Christ. In similar fashion, people have been speculating the end of the world ever since people began to comprehend what 'the world' was.
So toss these two happy thoughts together and you get an uplifting prophecy from the book of Revelations that says the 'Antichrist' will appear, and he will mark the end of time.
Fortunately for us, the bible has a prophecy-hit-percentage of exactly ZERO .

I don't get it. The media basically hands the reins of power to the "moral" Religious Right, and what do they do? They blow it by going after a cartoon character. I'm not surprised, though. They've done this before. Many times, in fact.
01/03/05 :: By Tom Ball Christian Right Vs. Christian Left: Conversations with ConservativesCategories :: Conservatives :: Framing 101 :: Religion
On the left, religion is met with a feeling of nurturance, tolerance and compassion. This is reflected in the lefts immediate reaction to the global disaster -- helping those in need in any way possible -- focusing on those most vulnerable.
On the right, religion is a vehicle of punishment, intolerance, and constant judgment as well as a convenient tool for rationalizing inhumane behavior. This is symbolized by the following conversation (paraphrased to account for imperfect memory):

Drudge breathlessly posted the headline warning, "Declaration of Independence Banned..." Once again, Drudge is a critical voice in the right-wing echo chamber, giving legs to a story that was picked up by both Reuters and the AP. Of course the 'story' was so incredibly one-sided as to border on an outright lie.

George W. Bush has broken the great seal separating church from state, the seal of “religious indifference” that de Crevècoeur in 1782 recognized as the distinguishing trait of Americans.

10/20/04 :: By Stu Finkel The Faith-Based Presidency, Laura Bush, and The Grand InquisitorCategories :: George W. Bush :: Philosophy :: Religion
George W. Bush's faith-based presidency is based on the fallacy that true belief depends on being unquestioning. Even Laura Bush's favorite author Dostoyevsky, himself an ardent Christian conservative, knew better: faith is based precisely on being free to not believe, and to believe nonetheless.
08/05/04 :: By Drew Johnston A Delicate Issue: Point-CounterpointCategories :: Religion
This is an interesting story, one that will probably be popping up throughout the political community over the next few days. It's the kind of thing that sounds ridiculous at first brush, but it ends up being surprisingly complex. Here's a synopsis: A woman is fired from the telecommunications company she worked at after she broke a company policy forbidding pork products on the premises. The CEO and administrators were Muslims who followed the Koran's very strict regulations regarding pork (they won't even touch pork, or anything that has been touched by pork).
