The Real Vote For President
Categories :: Election 2004
December 13 came and went yesterday and was little-noticed by either the public or the media. Yet it was a crucial day in the Presidential election, as presidential electors met around the nation to cast the real votes for President. But one screwed up....or did he?

Who's the Fiscal Conservative?

Gender Gap Disappears?
Categories :: Elections
NPR's Cokie Roberts reported today that not only has the gender gap disappeared, but Bush is actually winning the women's vote.
How many people actually believe this? Democrats have been winning the women's vote for 20 years. If any Republican is going to erase it, it won't be Bush.
Further evidence that the polls are useless this year.

Whither Edwards?
Categories :: Edwards, John
Edwards was supposed to be the warm fuzzy lovable face of the KE04 campaign. Hence, the media scratches its head about Edwards' campaigning in poor, rural, struggling, small communities. Not me; I think it's brilliant.

2004 A Mixed Bag For Gay Rights

A year in review as it concerns election of gay and lesbian candidates, anti-gay-marriage legislation and consitutional amendments, and (voluntary and involuntary) outing of gay politicians. Although 2004 is a mixed bag, there is reason for optimism.

GOP Strategery Kicked By Donkey
Categories :: Campaigns
Ever since Dukakis vowed not to respond to negative attacks, the Democratic Party has been seen (rightly or wrongly - usually rightly) as docile and timid. Like his old boss, Kerry has promised to run a positive campaign and has even indicated that he would not respond to the GOP's anticipated invective. (Let's wait for the GOP convention and the debates; I, for one, doubt Kerry will let the GOP get away with much.) Anyway, thank you, Donna Brazile - I hereby award you the Kicking Ass (as in Donkey, people!) Award.

Reinvention, Spin, and Claiming the Middle
Categories :: Campaigns
It’s not hard to see how and why the gears of the GOP spin machine are finding it hard to get a firm purchase in the effort to demonize the Democrats this time around. The Republican party has drifted so far to the right that Democrats are the party of hope, the party of progress, the party of unity, the party of ideas, and the party of “strength and wisdom.” It’s the message that’s important, and Democrats have captured the flag.

It's the Kerry, Stupid
Categories :: Kerry, John
President Bush’s failed Presidency, lackluster campaign, and a largely cowed media have handed John Kerry the political equivalent of an inside straight. But Kerry needs to close the deal. Voters have opened themselves up to the concept of not voting for Bush, but that's only half the pie. Kerry has to give them a reason to vote for him. So far, he hasn't done so.

Kerry Should Resign - Soon
Categories :: Kerry-Edwards 2004
While the prospect of John Kerry’s victory is tantalizing, it is potentially complicating in terms of control of the Senate. None of this should come as any surprise, but the importance is sometimes underappreciated. Even if temporary, control of the Senate by Republicans during the first few months of Kerry’s term will impact confirmations of Kerry’s cabinet nominees, passage of critical legislation, and possibly even the budget resolution. So what should be done about it?
